How To PLay

Portuguese Horseshoes is a fun and competitive outdoor game that involves tossing washers into opposing boxes to score points. Here’s how to play:

Set Up:

  • Place the boxes 10-20 feet apart, depending on skill level.

  • The game can be played 1v1 or 2v2, with teammates standing opposite each other and opponents on either side.

  • Each player throws 4 washers per round.

Gameplay:

  • Players alternate throwing their washers towards the opposing box to gain points.

  • You must throw from behind the front edge of the box—stepping over the line results in forfeiting your turn.

  • If a washer touches the ground before reaching the box, it’s removed from the game.

Scoring:

  • 1 point is awarded for a washer on top of the box.

  • 2 points are given for a washer leaning against the backboard or if you can see through the center of the washer leaning over the hole.

  • 3 points are given for a washer that goes into the hole.

  • After all 8 washers are thrown, each player's points are totaled. Points from opposing players cancel each other out.

    • Example: If Player A scores 7 points and Player B scores 5 points, Team A scores 2 points.

  • If a washer lands on the top railing of the box, it’s an automatic win.

Winning the Game:

  • The first team to reach 21 points wins the game.
