How To Play

Kubb is a strategic and engaging lawn game often referred to as “Viking Chess.” It’s perfect for players of all ages and skill levels. Here’s how to play:

Setup:

  • Set up a rectangular playing field (approx. 16x26 feet) on a flat surface.

  • Place 5 wooden kubbs evenly spaced on each baseline (the back edges of the field).

  • Position the king in the center of the field.

  • Divide players into two teams of 1–6 players each.

Positioning:

  • Teams stand behind their respective baseline.

  • Players take turns throwing from this line during the game.

Starting the Game:

  • Decide which team goes first with a coin flip or toss.

  • The starting team throws all six batons (wooden dowels) underhand, aiming to knock down the kubbs on the opponent’s baseline.

Gameplay:

  • When a kubb is knocked down, the opposing team tosses it onto the field (anywhere between the king and the baseline). These become “field kubbs.”

  • Before attacking baseline kubbs, teams must first knock down all field kubbs.

  • If a field kubb isn’t knocked down, the opposing team advances to that kubb’s position for their next turn (making it easier to attack).

Winning the Game:

  • After all kubbs (field and baseline) are knocked down, teams can attack the king.

  • The first team to successfully knock over the king wins!

  • Be careful: knocking over the king before all kubbs are down results in an automatic loss.

Rules and Safety:

  • All throws must be underhand.

  • Avoid throwing the batons in a way that could harm other players or damage the kubbs.

  • Encourage players to strategize as a team to maximize their turns.

Kubb combines skill, strategy, and a touch of luck for a fun and memorable experience. Gather your team and let the battle begin!
